The international environmental exhibition ECOMEDIU was held between the 15th and 17th of October 2014 at Expo Arad, Arad, Romania

ECOMEDIU 2014:
An international effort to improve the environment

The international environmental exhibition ECOMEDIU, organized by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arad County was held between the 15th and 17th of October 2014 at Expo Arad and hosted 30 stands where the latest equipment and products on the market were exhibited.
During the three days of the exhibition four conferences were held on "Protection of water, air and soil", "Ambrose, a danger to human health"; "Recovery, sorting and recycling of waste"; "Biodiversity and volunteering".

The conference dedicated to the eradication of ragweed was attended by researchers, doctors, mayors, county councilors, representatives of the local police, of Agricultural Chambers and universities in order to debate the effects of ragweed allergens, symptoms, preventive vaccinations and global spreading with emphasis on Romania.

ECOMEDIU was attended by important market leaders in the field of hazardous waste and non-hazardous, sanitation public domain, research and development institutes, and representatives of national and international environmental associations. The Romanian Association of Sanitation was represented by Mr. Alexei Atudorei, Scientific Technical Committee Chairman. With the support of Enterprise Europe Network, over 150 business meetings were held between participants: exhibiting companies, town halls, universities, international organizations, research and development centers, multinational companies, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arad county generating ideal platform to develop new partnerships and business opportunities in the field.

During the event a conference on waste management was organized on October 16th.

The main topics were:

  •   Planning the implementation of sustainable municipal waste management in Romania between 2014 - 2020 (Romanian Association of Sanitation, Teamnet Romania);
  •   Use of waste as raw construction material (Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, ECOTIC Association);
  •   Waste Management. Case study "Lipova non-hazardous solid waste landfill" (the Environmental Protection Agency Arad);
  •   Recovery of industrial waste (Technical University of Timisoara);
  •   Attitudes and habits concerning electrical and electronic equipment generated waste (ECOTIC Association);
  •   New valuable products from rubber and plastic recycling through the thermal depolymerization method (Politehnica University of Timisoara, The Ploiesti Petrol and Gas University, Power Oil Company Timisoara);
  •   Modern computing systems (Software and Romcontrol).

The conference was attended by representatives of the National Agency for Waste Management in Hungary (ANMD) who presented the legislation regarding taking responsibility for achieving the targets for packaging waste, WEEE, batteries and tires. The Hungarian companies responsible were replaced in 2012 by the newly established ANMD which took all responsibilities in 2013, managed and controlled the waste streams described above and introduced a traceability system that has been shown to be very effective.

The funds collected are redistributed by ANMD into new public-only investments.
This solution implemented in Hungary is considered by most EU Member States as inconsistent with the principle of "Extended Producer Responsibility" and therefore will not provide recycling and recovery of packaging waste for example, in a legally effective economic and environmental way.
The talks between specialists in waste management continued at the exhibit stands and at the business meetings, with the final conclusion being that "the prevention of environmental pollution due to waste management activities should be approached as a problem that can be solved by both public as well as private investments".

With the support of Enterprise Europe Network, over 150 business meetings were held between participants: exhibiting companies, town halls, universities, international organizations, research and development centers, multinational companies, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Arad County, therefore generating the ideal platform to develop new partnerships and business opportunities in the field.

The event benefited from the support of the Romanian Association of Sanitation (ARS) and the International Association for the Solid Waste Management (ISWA), to which organizers are grateful for their involvement in raising professionalism standards at the 2014 ECOMEDIU.

The largest quantities of recyclable materials generated by companies in the area are paper-cardboard and plastics waste

NEW INVESTMENTS IN ROMANIA

REMATHOLDING group began two years ago an investment of 10 million euros in Prahova County, in the village Aricestii Rahtivani.

Currently most of the machinery and equipment that have been purchased are in the final technological tests. For the project in Prahova, REMATHOLDING group accessed European funds, through the "Increase of Economic Competitiveness" Sectorial Operational Program, of approximately 4 million euros.

The investment in Aricestii Rahtivani has as main objective the collection, processing and recovery of waste resulting from the activities of companies operating in West Crâng Industrial Park Ploiesti.
Following the activities of the companies that work on the Industrial Park platform, result all recycled and recovered materials, justifying the implementation of process lines for recovering materials from all five categories of waste: ferrous, non-ferrous metal, non-metal, end of life vehicles (ELV) and electronic equipment and appliances (EAD).

The largest quantities of recyclable materials generated by companies in the area are paper-cardboard and plastics waste. The treatment and recovery center has four plants, namely: a waste sorting facility, plastics material washing system foil, a facility for granulation of plastic material, a facility for draining fluids from end of life vehicles, and the activities take place in four halls, on a technological platform of about 3.5 hectares.
Through the investment made in Aricestii Rahtivani, REMATHOLDING consolidates its position in the waste management industry in Romania, as a large investor. REMATHOLDING ended 2013 with a turnover of over 130 million euros and has made a profit every year since its establishment 10 years ago.

Last year the company began extracting gold, silver, tungsten and other valuable materials from waste electrical and electronic equipment.
