ISWA SOLID WASTE WORLD CONGRESS 2014

IT'S NOT ONLY ABOUT WASTE!

Almost 1,000 delegates from 64 countries gathered in Sao Paulo, Brazil, host for the ISWA World Congress 8-11 September 2014. An ISWA Congress is the meeting point for the waste industry every year, attracting professionals from all over the world to discuss advancements, challenges, trends and solutions for the different types of waste generated by each one of us.

However an ISWA Congress is not only about waste. It is networking, exchanging knowledge, culture, social entertainment and business. It is time to [Re] discover a New World and find Sustainable Solutions for a Healthy Future.

Message from Mr. Bruno Covas, Sao Paulo State Secretary of Environment

With a population of 40 million people and a ground area equivalent to the United Kingdom, corresponding to around 2% of the national territory, São Paulo generates one third of the national GDP, 38% of the industrial production and more than a half of the whole country's scientific production.
Such economic concentration has ensured a high level of development, but also brought huge challenges to the environmental field, which led, back in 1968, to the creation of a strong, capable environmental department, which is nowadays among the five most important environmental agencies in the world.
Throughout this journey, many problems have already been overcome, bringing important achievements to the population. In the field of Solid Waste, for instance, currently, almost all the 30 thousand tons generated daily in the State are either directed to appropriated or controlled installations.
However, such results do not finish our work, it allows us to look even further, towards the different ways of waste management. Once granted an adequate final disposal, the challenge is to advance towards the implantation of our own Solid Waste State's Policy, which brings new principles and values. Amongst them, we highlight the classification of waste as materials to be utilized, replacing the extraction of natural resources through prevention, reuse and recycling. Amongst the various environmental benefits, these actions define the principles of a Green Economy, creating new jobs, and adding value to the waste, instead of just generating costs from sending it to landfills.
It is based on such spirit of renewal that the Secretary of Environment praises and supports the ISWA World Congress 2014, happening in the city of São Paulo. We are certain that the discussions raised by this important event will be of great importance to the society, and that our State will have the opportunity to contribute and learn with this admirable exchange of ideas and experiences.

ISWA President David Newman: "Sustainable Waste Management to ensure a healthy future"

ISWA WORLD CONGRESS 2014
SÃO PAULO, Brazil, 8-11 september

This year one of the world's megacities was the stage for the ISWA World Congress. An estimated 20 million people live in greater São Paulo, making it the third-largest metropolis on earth. The venue fitted perfectly to one of ISWA's current main complex of themes: megacities, informal sector and global recycling markets.

ISWA President David Newman expanded on the congress topic "Sustainable Waste Management to ensure a healthy future" in his opening speech.
Almost 1,000 Waste Management Experts from 64 countries attended the event, and the participants were offered much during the three congress days: the extensive programme contained more than 220 speeches in 55 sessions and several side events like the IPLA Global Forum and the RWM Trade Fair.
The ISWA Young Professionals Group, which has been established in 2013, organised a special session and an art exhibition that portrayed creative initiatives of the civil society engaged with the problems of solid waste.

One of the social events highlights of the congress was the gala dinner and the ISWA Award Presentation Ceremony in the HSBC Brazil Hall where a spectacular samba intervention and an exceptional show band made many congress delegates dance until very late night.
An inspiring speech from Antwerp Vice Mayor Phillip Heylen at the closing ceremony made the participants look forward with pleasant anticipation to the ISWA World Congress 2015 in Belgium.

It wouldn't be Brazil if the host of the 2014 ISWA World Congress wouldn't have organised a football tournament for the participants as a side event after the congress. A big thank you to Carlos Filho Silva and his team for arranging this truly memorable experience!
23 not just waste but also football enthusiasts from all over the world registered for the match which took place at one of the most beautiful stadiums of Sao Paulo, the Pacaembu stadium with a capacity of over 40,000 (it was not completely sold out... as you can take from the photos there were still some seats available ;-)
Everything was prepared excellently - the especially designed ISWA uniforms already hanging in each players locker in the changing room at their arrival, a competent team of professional referees, the playground in perfect condition, medals for all participants - and, of course, the ISWA World Cup trophy for the winning team.
The spectators were lucky to see a very interesting match with a dramatic run of things and many goals - despite the extremely high temperature which demanded the players to unlock their last reserves. The very close match ended 6:4. After the game the participants were offered the opportunity to visit to the Football Museum.
